to the 2000 Konze Prize Recipients:
First
Prize
Shirley Arkin, Ms. Florida Senior America 2000, and “Music Behind
the Wall,” a program serving the incarcerated youth of
the Dade County Correctional System. Ms.
Arkin, a gifted opera singer, founded “Music Behind the
Wall,” to allow incarcerated teens the opportunity to
learn life-lessons, as well as school lessons, through drama
and music. Her choice of production for her unusual troupe:
“West Side Story.

Prize
Sheila
Kelly, Ms. Minnesota Senior America 2000, and “Newborns
in Need.” Ms.
Kelly and the volunteers of “Newborns in Need” use
their considerable skills in machine knitting to provide
hospitals with layettes for newborns throughout Minnesota.
Babies go home bundled up in the warmth of this organization's
beautiful knits as well as their love.

Patricia
Odom, Ms. Alabama Senior America 2000, and the
“Sunshine Kids.” The
Sunshine Kids are dedicated to providing a positive experience
for children diagnosed with cancer, and for them, Ms. Odom has
helped to raise over $100,000.00. Her personal mission is to
see that every child with cancer can be a “Sunshine Kid.

Senior America,
Inc. is particularly proud to have a Trustee of the Konze
Foundation, David J. Connelley, Esq. present at the 2000 Ms. Senior America
Pageant to personally award the Konze Prizes. Mr. Connelley
and the other Trustees of the Konze Foundation seek to encourage all
senior women to exemplify the Senior America philosophy that
"...seniors are the foundation of America... It is upon
their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation
has the opportunity to build a better society."
