Karen was born in Salt Lake City and attended public school in Ogden, Utah. Inspired by her parents (both earned advanced degrees), she has filled her life with learning by earning two doctorates (1 in psych;, 1 in law), the latter after retiring early as a school psychologist (WY).
Karen is a retired attorney (UT & WY) and educator teaching elementary grades (UT, AZ & CA), high school math and science (AZ & WY). She has been a professor of psychology (full time, VA; extension UW & USU) and school psychologist (CA, VA & WY). She has also worked as a research specialist (CA & VA), in a private family therapy practice (VA), as a quality-control chemist (summers, UT), interior designer (p-t, UT) and ballet instructor (p-t, UT).
While growing up, Karen studied modern date at 5-6, then ballet and painting, privately, through high school. In her late 30’s, she took classes in Tae Kwon Do (eventually earning a 2nd degree black belt).
Karen developed expertise in family therapy (1st doctorate, U of AZ) and has taught hundreds of parents/teachers parenting skills and educational issues graduate classes. She continues to enjoy speaking publically on the importance of responsible parenting (and how to do it) where and whenever invited.
Now living in Mesquite, Nevada, by choice, Karen has taken up tap and recently jazz dancing and belongs to a senior tap team, the Mesquite-Toes, who perform at city functions and throughout Nevada raising funds for charitable organizations , and internationally.
Karen plays bridge with her social club, the Desert Dames, is a member of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce and serves as co-president of the Mesquite League of Women Voters.
Karen has reared two children, who are now responsible adults and citizens (in AZ), and feels they are the best two “things” she’s done in her life. She also has two grown step children (in CO) of whom she is proud.
In her spare time Karen is an avid reader and enjoys sewing (often costumes for the “Toes”), Knitting, and with her husband, Barry, ballroom dancing (esp. salsa), hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, traveling and gardening (summer, at their high desert cabin in (CO).
