CONGRATULATIONS to the beautiful and vivacious BARBARA HILL, MS. Mississippi Senior America 2010! And special thanks to Gladys Hughes for another fantastic pageant and successful year!!

Barbara Hill was born and reared in Texas. Later in life, she lived in Seattle Washington, and Alaska. Sixteen years ago, she and her husband, John moved to the beautiful area of Summit, Mississippi.

Barbara’s love of baton twirling, modeling, drama, and singing began the age of 11. She was the featured twirler for her high school, and twirled two fire batons! After high school, she went to an all women’s college…Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She majored in the academic field of social and cultural studies, and minored in, dance, theater, and fashion design. Barbara held the title of Miss Houston and was crowned Miss Texas in 1956. She went on to compete in the Miss America Pageant.

Going back to college at age 45 was not easy, but Barbara earned a Physician’s Assistant Degree, and worked in the Emergency Room at the V.A. Hospital in Seattle Washington for a few years. Later after moving back to Texas, she changed her field and became District Manager Trainer for Wal-Mart Studios. She was transferred to Mississippi and her main job responsibility was to travel and visit all the Wal-Mart’s in the state. She loved the traveling and being around lots of children. She retired from there in 1999 after being diagnosed with cancer.

As a daughter, Barbara had the privilege of taking care of her mother for three years and than took care of her father for five years. She lost her older son soon after that and really learned that life is very precious and fragile.

Barbara is very active in her community. She is President of Preceptor Zeta Sorority and was named Outstanding Woman of the Year. She is an Eastern Star and a member of the Ladies’ Axillaries of the American Legion and VFW. Barbara teaches Sunday school to 3rd graders, has gone on mission trips with the youth groups, helps homebound elders, children with diabetes, and finding homes / jobs for homeless veterans. As Barbara is a cancer survivor for 10 years, she takes part in Relay for Life. As a lover of pageants, she is also a member of the Mississippi Association of Pageant Judges, Inc.

Currently, Barbara teaches underprivileged children baton twirling, modeling, piano, dancing and singing and puts them in the local Christmas parades. Some of her other interests include designing most of her clothes and decorating homes.

Barbara and her husband have been married 24 years in September. After experiencing both of their spouses passing away, they later married and together, they have a combined family of 14 children, 25 grandchildren - including a set of triplets, and 24 great-grand children. What a joy when they get all together!

Even with all the problems in the world today, Barbara believes in today’s society. She feels that she is a leader and guide in her community helping young women to set goals in the right direction. She handles herself with confidence and composure. She is a sincere and caring person and humorous at times. Most of all, she is a Christian. She has been effective in setting positive patterns and goals in order to maintain a healthy self-esteem with overwhelming fresh enthusiasm. She feels that anything is possible and dreams do come true!
