CONGRATULATIONS TO the lovely SHARON JONES, MS. Iowa SENIOR AMERICA 2010! We wish Sharon the best of luck in Atlantic City at the National Pageant!
|
Dr. Sharon Jones, born to a military family in Kosciusko, Mississippi, had the advantage of assimilating in many different locations and cultures. “I was always the new girl, and I had to make friends fast,” Sharon said, “but it has stayed with me my entire life. I never meet a stranger.”
Sharon was divorced when she was twenty-six. She and her daughter, Lori, moved back to Mississippi and had the utmost support from her parents, which allowed her to start a new and exciting journey. Even without a college degree at the time, she worked in advertising and merchandising and modeled for a daily television program. She especially enjoyed the television commercials that resulted from this daily exposure.
Using her advertising and merchandising background, she developed a product that was sold in major department stores. The product, “Sharon’s Secret Organic Wrinkle Reducer” was a real hit with ladies of a certain age. Sharon understands that is was the beginning of her focus on successful aging.
When Sharon was forty she realized that the one thing missing from her life was a college degree. She took an English course at a local community college and fell in love with academia. It was during this time that she met and fell in love with Egbert Jones, who was to become her husband and her most ardent supporter. Secure in a happy marriage and enjoying the pursuit of her degree, life was perfect until tragedy struck. Her husband, who was the love of her life, was killed in a train accident. Understandably, Sharon was devastated, but knew she had to chart a new path.
Sharon was dedicated to her educational pursuits. After receiving her M.S. in Sociology, she thought she would be content, but she wasn’t. She returned five years later to obtain her Ph.D. at the age of sixty. She was so excited about being sixty and earning a terminal degree she wrote a book, “Sixty…So What?” Sharon said, “When I see my book in a bookstore, or someone in a restaurant stops me to say how much the book meant to them, I just can’t describe the feeling.”
Dr. Sharon Jones epitomizes successful aging.

The Ms. Senior America Pageant is
the world's first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to
women who have reached the "Age of Elegance." It is a search
for the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and
inner beauty of all senior Americans. The Ms. Senior America philosophy
is based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and
our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and
resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better
society.
