Barbara Chappell was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in a small rural community about 30 miles away. She now resides in Adamsville, which is a suburb of Birmingham. She has two daughters, one son, four grandchildren and is expecting another grandchild in November.
She started working as a substitute teacher and teacher's aide with Jefferson County Board of Education, then transferred to the Birmingham Board of Education as an Administrative Assistant in their Central Office and retired from there. When her children became teenagers she went to Real Estate School at night and secured her Real Estate License and worked a second job as a Sales Agent for 27 years.
Barbara's love of life is volunteer work. She prides herself in being an intergenerational volunteer, from nursing homes to underprivleged children. She is in her 9th year mentoring high school students and raising funds for college scholarships for underprivleged children who never dreamed college was a possibilty. She lives her philosophy - "It's not what happens to you in life that matters, but how you handle it that determines the kind of person you become."
She got involved with the Senior Pageant System due to her daughter's persistence. She was crowned Senior Ms. Jefferson County, 2007; and is the reigning Senior Ms. Rocket City. She was voted Ms. Congeniality Ms. Senior Alabama Pageant 2008.
For over 40 years, Barbara has considered Illinois her second home, visiting family members in Chicago at least twice annually. She fell in love with the Windy City and still claims the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue as her favorite place to shop. Some of her fondest memories are times she and her children spent at Navy Pier, Wrigley Field, watching fireworks over Lake Michigan, the Museums of Natural Arts, Science and History, to name a few. It is quite fitting that Barbara White Chappell is Ms. Illinois Senior America 2008.
