CONGRATULATIONS: MARILYN O'CONNELL from Phoenix, Arizona, MS ARIZONA SENIOR AMERICA 2008!

Congratulations to the State Director Robin Colagrande and the Arizona State Cameo Club for a fantastic pageant and a beautiful delegate for the National Pageant.

The first part of my life after the growing up years, though profoundly important can be summed up as wife, homemaker and stay at home mom of four. I was active in fund-raising for my church and schools, Brownie and Cub Scout leader, acted in church plays and sang to my children.

The second part was busy too, homemaker still and mother to teenagers, part time sales jobs and Fashion coordinator and commentator over 20 years in the Chicago and San Francisco areas. I began developing my art as an oil painter; portraits and plains wildlife are my major interests and began teaching art in a senior center in California. Later, I worked in the San Francisco Bay area demonstrating and teaching portrait painting in art centers.

I started to pursue my true passion, singing; and was active in the Sweet Adelines over 35 years, performing with my barbershop quartet in care centers, hospitals and the like for over 25 of those years. My choruses won many medals, regionally and internationally.

I was a Real Estate associate in California 1970 to 1983.

The current part of my journey is wonderful. Competing in the Ms. Senior Arizona Pageant in 2005 changed my life and made a young girl’s dream come true. Now eligible for the Cameo Club of Arizona, I have performed in over 35 shows in care facilities, Veterans hospitals etc. I produced a variety show in 2005 and 2006 produced a musical fashion show and just completed chairing “Shop for a Cause” at Macy’s, all events to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter. For over six years I have performed in care centers in “Pocket Shows” with our Entertainer’s group in my retirement community. I was juried into the Arizona Art Alliance in 2003.

I competed in the Arizona Senior Olympics in doubles tennis and won medals in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. I am a therapeutic tennis coach and also coach track and field for the Arizona Special Olympics.

Currently I have three private art students and taught art at the Pecos Senior Center this year.

My platform: to raise awareness for the need of volunteers and contributions for Special Olympics.

The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the world's first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the "Age of Elegance." It is a search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans. The Ms. Senior America philosophy is based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a better society.
